Just a peek, for now.

•August 7, 2008 • 5 Comments

Whew! It’s taken me a while to clean up in here before I could actually write anything. I didn’t realize I’d been gone that long. Oh well, work to do, places to see, people to meet, adventures to be had, such is life, isn’t it?

I’m thanking all of you who’ve been riding me about putting up a fresh post, especially those of you who’ve hunted me down and given me an earful about neglecting my readers. This is not much, but it helps, right?

The past few months have taken me through highs and lows in my work, I was really psyched up for it but the last few weeks especially have been crazy. It’s mostly done now though, and I can enjoy the tiny bit of my holiday that’s left over…Ah, who am I kidding, there’s no such thing as free time for an AIESECer.

Anywho, here are a couple of interesting quotes I picked up and thought I’d share:

Ideas load the gun but instinct pulls the trigger.

Trust is like virginity, it’s only broken once.

Keep a positive mind because a positive thought can’t be denied.

Never sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the temporary.

Leaders make mistakes but learn.

Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.

When the person you love breaks up with you and says you can still be friends, it’s like your dog dying and your mum saying you can still keep it.

I Know a Dude…

•May 14, 2008 • 11 Comments

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

He’d never buy a girl anything,               He’s creative as hell.

nothing off a shelf.                                Always drawing, writing, singing

But always talked about                          A little time spent with him

new clothes and cars for himself.            Will always leave me tingling

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

He’s not the smartest dude,                   Who works long and hard

sometimes as thick as smog                   To bring home the bacon

He’ll never get the message                   He’s been through so much

Unless it’s on my blog.                           But it’s never too much to take on

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

A fascinating creature                            Who takes his time

The sharpest mind ever                         He makes a girl his friend

But when it comes to women                  Cos when life happens

He’s just not so clever                           That’s what matters in the end

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

Who’s not a woman’s man                     He’s such a gentle soul

He’s not much of a looker                      But in his heart there burns a fire

But he makes a neat packet                   To eventually be the winner

And that gets him a hooker                    And get everything he desires

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

Who thinks he owns the world                who I call a planter

He’ll never know when he gets hit          He gets people thinking

He’s so absorbed in himself                   Makes them think big

And so full of shit                                  And keeps them believing

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

Who wants nothing serious                     He’s often been wronged

Just a string of one-night stands             so he’s rather damaged

He thinks every girl he meets                 But I wish he’d stay hopeful

Is a lay he’ll land                                    for the successes he’s managed

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

He’s a fanatic of porn                            who’s a great inspiration

And he searches his body like Google      and always keeps his word

He spends days in bed                            if he keeps going like that

Playing with his doodle                           one day he’ll rule the world

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

No girl would like to meet                       Who’s a little shy

He makes promises that he’ll break        But he’d go the extra mile

He’s got so many bad habits                  To lighten a heavy heart

That he expects a woman to take           And make a girl smile

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

Who’s got a girl so smart                       his girlfriend is his princess

And also very beautiful                           he loves that she’s intelligent

He treats her like a trophy                     and marvels at her beauty

Cos he feels threatened and fearful        around her, he’s always himself

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

Who doesn’t appreciate his girl              who’s been married for a while

Even though he says he loves her            he still doesn’t see too clearly

And throws jealous fits                          but he knows she’s his soul mate

When his friends compliment her            and he loves her dearly

I know a dude….                                    I know a dude….

Who only cares when it’s handy.            Who tries to see from her angle

He ignores her most of the time             ke knows to put her first

Only calls when he gets randy                 he knows it takes two

Which is easily all the time                     and it’s for her that he thirsts

We’re going broke! and other things

•April 14, 2008 • 3 Comments

Some political nonsense we’re forced to deal with, just thinking about it makes reason disappear. Have you seen the new Cabinet line-up? Gah! Kenya has problems! P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S!!!!!! Why are we in such a rush??? The election results were announced in a huge rush, in a private lounge somewhere. The peace deal was done in a bloody hurry and this so-called government of national unity was penned in an even bigger rush (in more sensible places, coalition governments take even years to form). So what’s the rush in Kenya? Oh, I get it, if things aren’t put on paper quickly enough we are going to riot and kill each other. Big fuckin deal, we’re going to be rioting and killing each other soon enough. Just because it’s on paper doesn’t mean we’re pleased. And those people who riot just because things are delayed, those are the ones who’re suffering majorly from this “under a dollar a day” business. Just you wait till they realize how much will be needed for all those salaries now and how much of they national cake they WON’T be getting. I’m only hoping all those idiots are doing volunteer work because I, for one, am not giving up my salon money just so I can watch them sit on their fat asses and continue to make us kill each other.

Aw hell, what on earth is wrong with this country? We’re so stupid, we are. Zimbabweans are still waiting for election results and are they killing each other? Not that I’ve heard. Meanwhile, Kenyans cannot wait two days. No wonder we’re so screwed. They know how much power they hold over us…. If I met one of those two “big men” today, all I’d want to do is land a mighty kick in his bollocks. Seriously. Nothing to say anymore. All respect is lost.

It’s such things that make me wonder where Africa is going. I had a discussion with a renowned political scientist a while back and the one thing we agreed on is that the world has only so far seen about two rebels who really have/had a cause: Fidel Castro and Muammar Qaddafi. Hugo Chavez, Robert Mugabe and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are fast making their way up that list.

Africa first: This continent is in a state of decay. Politics is ruining us. The classical definition of politics is a calculated attempt by groups and individuals to influence policy. Some people are taking that too much to heart, especially on the individual level. Have a look at the long history of coups and counter-coups in Nigeria and Zaire. People actually try to own whole countries. Like Moise Tshombe’s attempt at Katanga’s secession that led to a drawn-out US vs USSR proxy war. And the MPLA vs UNITA conflict in Angola. The greed of a couple of men led to the extension of the Cold War in Africa. And President Moi, Lord, this man was trying to grab the whole of Africa! With his buddies beyond the borders, the likes of Mobutu. He couldn’t believe it when Mobutu was overthrown by Laurent Kabila and his rag-tag army of gumboot-wearing teenagers.

Anyway, those are the issues that caused the OAU to disappoint miserably and Qaddafi eventually demanded in 1999 that Africans form a separate union to deal with those problems. So came the AU. But look what’s happening now, Libya is paying for everything on this bleedin continent. Peace-keeping missions, conferences, meetings of heads of state, everything. People say Qaddafi is a dictator but do you hear Libyans complaining? Are they not living in peace? And luxurious peace at that, even though the weight of Africa’s debts fall on them and they’re still paying off the odd few hundred million pounds they were fined for the Lockerby bombing.

Qaddafi is the only person who’s got a right to say to the world that the only men in Africa right now are Mugabe and Museveni. And I agree wholeheartedly. Who says Mugabe is evil? When you’re fed up, you don’t wait for the Queen to give you direction. You get rid of the elements draining your land. I don’t entirely agree with his methods, but as much as we as outsiders express disgust at the economic situation, we’re probably suffering more from inflation and food shortages than Zimbabweans are. And besides, we’re still handcuffed by this stinking Commonwealth business. The word Commonwealth is simply a euphemism for “neo-colonised”. The Brits realized they couldn’t continue to occupy our lands by force but they’re still forcing us to sell them our raw materials at exploitative prices, buy their processed goods at even more exploitative rates, play their sports, obsess over the FA Cup and even drive on the left side of the road so when British nationals come here they don’t get confused. Zimbabwe?? Congratulations and a lot of respect to the only former British colony that is no longer a neo-colonized state.

Gosh, how stupid do westerners (the use of the word “west” here is deliberate) think we are?? They continue to undermine our own systems in ways that disgust me to no ends. A couple of months ago when there was all this political drama in Kenya there was a foreign envoy or two that dared to summon some politicians to their offices to explain themselves. What on God’s earth?? How on earth can they do that?? As who??? Only the ICC has the jurisdiction to do that and they’re still too busy trying to catch Joseph Kony and cussing Milosevic for dying, they were so dying to hang him. Those spokesmen of imperialists are always on hand to tell us that “the world is watching”. The world is not watching, the west screws us over then sits back to watch and laugh. We are living on our knees, Africa.

Seriously, African politics is with the dogs. But I wish westerners like George Bush would just leave us alone instead of playing God, when they can’t even handle their own business. And with all these issues going on around us, I find it hard to believe that some people claim apathy. I don’t mean anyone any offense by this, because I do have friends who claim to be politically apathetic, but I don’t believe there’s any such thing as that. Especially not when someone spends years loudmouthing about how much they don’t care then when elections roll around they’re to be found in the voting lines. That isn’t exactly a show of how much they don’t care. But from most of the experience I’ve had, political “apathy” is just an excuse to sit back and tell everyone what they’re doing wrong.

Speaking of which, what on earth is wrong with George Bush? Doesn’t he know when to pull out??? (pun not intended) Iraq is a C.A.T.A.S.T.R.O.P.H.E. This man is single-handedly responsible for more people dead and displaced that Katrina. I mean, he’s bombing places this way and that, killing scores of defenceless women and children. People say we should support the war because of all those young soldiers suffering out there. I say, feel sorry for those soldiers losing their limbs and their youth because of that bloody wanker but fuck the war. The only difference between George Bush and Joseph Kony is Bush has protection of status. Just because he’s the so-called leader of the free world no one is willing to question him. Apart from Chavez and Ahmadinejad, but I’ll go there later. Have there been any weapons of mass destruction found so far? No, so Americans and especially their leadership, need to learn to distinguish between Arabs and terrorists.

Bush hanged my hero. Yes, Saddam was my hero. I grew up around the time Operation Desert Storm was going on and that was all I ever heard about on the news. So as far as international politics was concerned, Saddam Hussein is a name I became well acquainted with. And having been obsessed with the issues of the Arab world from an early age, I actually identified with some of his ideals. It’s easy to see where people like him are coming from when you too are an underdog. And he wasn’t only a hero to me, he was an icon in Iraq. A symbol of unity believe it or not. When he was hanged I remember watching the news channels and all I could see was hundreds of Iraqis weeping for their fallen hero, telling George Bush, Americans and the people supporting the war that he’ll never know what damage he’d caused. And it’s true, he’ll just never know.

I like Ahmadinejad. He’s put the Middle East and the Islamic world on the map for things other than oil and religious extremism. (Oh, they’re so misundaztood!!!!) He’s been called an uneducated idiot to his face, in front of thousands of people, but he stands his ground. America is no longer a superpower. Not when they’ve spent over a trillion dollars on the war and are now being fed finances by China but trying to hide it. Besides addressing the issues of the East, he also brings out some things that are wrong about America, such as the restriction of the freedom of its people using the Patriot Act. And Bush is not the leader of the free world either. Someone needs to tell him that. Someone other that Ahmadinejad, he can’t do it alone. Oh wait, that’s what Chavez is there for! Maaaaaaaaaaaan, this guy has got balls! Thank you Jesus for sending us Hugo Chavez to tell us that George Bush is the devil and he smells of sulphur! He actually said that at the UN General Assembly. He held up a book by Noam Chomsky (who some refer to as the greatest mind on earth today) on imperialism and said “The American empire is doing all it can to consolidate the hegemonistic system of domination, and we cannot allow him to do that. We cannot allow world dictatorship to be consolidated.”

No, we can’t. This rant has gone on long enough. See you later I’ll, be busy saving Africa.

    Can you FEEL the music?

    •February 13, 2008 • 13 Comments

One of the things I look for in good music is the lyrical content. Recently I’ve been feeling break up songs cos of the very intense lyrics that make you feel. They make you FEEL. Doesn’t matter what, but music that brings out emotions is truly excellent. I love when music does that to me. Sample this:

My all time favourite band… Lyrics so simple but yet so expressive. Reminds me of My Immortal:

I am what I want you to want/ what I want you to feel/ But it’s like no matter what I do I can’t convince you/ to just believe this is real/ So I let go/ watching you/  turn your back like you always do/ Face away and pretend that I’m not

                                                                                        -Faint, Linkin Park

As for Maroon 5, Adam Levine does it every single time. If “She will be loved” didn’t make you tear up, this might:

I still don’t have the reason/ and you don’t have the time/ And it really makes me wonder/ if I ever gave a f*** about you/ Give me something to believe in/ ‘cause I don’t believe in you anymore/ I wonder if it even makes a difference to try/ So this is goodbye…God damn my spinning head/ decisions that made my bed/ now I must lay in it/ And deal with things I left unsaid

                                                                                        -Makes me wonder, Maroon 5

Trina is definitely the bad girl of rap right now. Jail was good for Lil Kim but as I waited for her to come out, I was rocking to these rhymes. Trina’s sharp tongue coupled with Kelly Rowland’s vocals make for a great track:

I’m too fly for this s***/ You playin’ yourself…. You treat me like a random chic… I can’t even look in your face/ without wanting to slap you… I aint lookin at you anymore/ I’m lookin past you….I aint tryin to hear it/ not this time.

-Here we go again, Trina ft Kelly Rowland

I love this song even more than “Hey there Delilah”, the track that propelled this band to fame. The rawness of the lyrics awakens some feelings, it’s almost heartbreaking:

Now you don’t mean a thing to me…. Hate is a strong word/ but I really really really don’t like you/ now that it’s over/ I don’t even know what I liked about you/ Brought you around/ and you just brought me down…. Thought you thought I was worth it/ Now I think a little differently.

                                                                                        -Hate, Plain White Ts

Other songs I won’t be forgetting soon:

    Together - Avril Lavigne

Irreplaceable – Beyonce (You keep talking that mess, that’s fine, but could you walk and talk at the same time… talking about how I’ll never find a man like you)

    Forget it – Breaking Benjamin

Outta my system – Bow Wow ft T-Pain

I hope you die – Bloodhound Gang

Shut up – Black Eyed Peas

    So far away – Crossfade

Never again – Kelly Clarkson (never again will I miss you/ never again will I kiss you/ never again will I want to)

Don’t wanna try no more – Frankie J

Enough crying – Mary J Blige

    Torn – Leytoya

    So Over - Katharine McPhee

I should have cheated – Keyshia Cole

    Don’t think I’m not – Kandi

     So gone - Monica

    And many, many more….

    Which song makes you FEEL?

    Crap, crap, CRAP!!!!!

    •February 12, 2008 • 11 Comments

And Valentine’s Day rolls around again. I love this day. I love it for the chocolates from my mum and for the flowers from my dad. And I love it even more for knowing that my parents don’t need a holiday as an excuse to tell me they love me or to get me gifts.

Other than that, there’s nothing too exciting about 14th Feb. I mean, I really enjoyed Valentine’s Day in high school. It was gifts galore, sweet cards, perfume and stuffed animals from boyfriends topped off with candy and flowers from my parents.

But these days, I’ve realized just how commercialized the whole affair is. There are ads going like “the most special way to say I love you”, yet the truth is that if you’ve got someone who really loves you, any way they say “I love you” is special. And I hate how they make it look like if you aren’t in a relationship you’ll be missing out on absolutely everything; fancy meals, flowers, candy, designer scents, red dresses, wine….. That’s stuff you can do any day if you ask me.

They say Valentine’s Day, much like a wedding, is a day for the ladies. I think that’s true. Going by the media hype, it’s all about pleasing the women. I feel sorry for the woman who’s got the man that doesn’t give a flying toss for Valentine’s Day. Or the one who’s stuck with a man that’s tighter than two coats of paint.

I other news: apparently Tyra Banks messed herself in public. Oh, the American media, how they’re going to go on about it for weeks. I can see the headlines already: “SKID MARKS ON THE RED CARPET” or maybe “RUNNY ON THE RUNWAY”. Nothing new about it, since we’re used to her talking about her IBS like it’s a joke and generally just unloading a lot of crap (pun intended) on her TV show. I’m surprised though, I thought high fashion models were adept at holding their laxatives.

And after reading this, I’m appalled and disgusted at the kind of double standards African Americans have. We see a whole lot of black stand-up acts spew a lot of racial crap. When a coloured person says the “N” word it’s ok but when a white person says it, they want to milk him for millions? Granted, Michael Richards’ was a rather personal attack but he says the “N” word 3 or 4 times and the whole of America is outraged, but when Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Katt Williams, Dave Chapelle, Bernie Mac, Martin Lawrence and a whole lot of other comedians say it in repeatedly during their acts, a lot of the times referring to particular people, they laugh about it and applaud their “celebrities”. Even Russell Peters makes racial cracks and he’s Indian! But the white comedians apparently have to find something else to make their audiences laugh about since if black comedians make jokes about race it’s fine, but if the white guys do it it’s called a racial slur.

I used to wonder why they curse so much cos sometimes it makes me cringe, but one of the aforementioned celebrities said something to the tune of “If we can’t curse and say n****, then all we’ve got left to talk to talk about is gay people and oral sex”. What degenerates!!! Come on, America.

    Quote of the day:
    “Kama unanipenda, hakika mimi utanilinda.”
    Alikiba

    Today’s playlist:
These colours don’t run – Iron Maiden
    Never again – Kelly Clarkson
F*** the system – System of a Down
    Billy’s Bones – Dropkick Murphys
Magna cum nada – Bloodhound Gang
    Mr. Brightside – The Killers
    Together – Avril Lavigne
    War on sound - Moonbabies
    So gone – Monica
    Grace – Kate Havnevik

Apparently your tattoo could kill you…

    •February 7, 2008 • 13 Comments

If you’ve got a tramp stamp, otherwise known as a lower back tattoo and sometimes referred to as a road map to Panam-ass City, it could kill you.

Doctors have found that when a syringe is put through one of those tattoos, for example when performing a spinal tap or giving an epidural, it pushes some of the dried ink particles and other debris into the spinal column, which is then carried by cerebrospinal fluid into the brain, causing irreversible brain damage and in some cases even death.

So if you’ve got a lower back tattoo, you better get used to the idea of an epidural-free natural birth and if you were planning to have one done, well; now you know one of the risks.

And what have we been reduced to?

Just over a week ago a Catholic priest was murdered in Eldama Ravine. He was the Vice Rector at St Mathias Mulumba Senior Seminary in Tindinyo. The killers had singled him out for being a Kikuyu while he was at the seminary and he went to stay in Eldama Ravine for the safety of the rest of the St Mathias Mulumba community. But they caught up with him and cut him to pieces, despite his pleas for mercy. They pulled him out of a group of people and hacked him to death, just like that.

Is this what Kenya has come to? Is it that people who carry out such acts have no conscience? Have we lost sight of everything that is important to us and now make decisions solely on the basis of tribe? Have we no respect for human life? Have we no respect for men of God? Have we turned into animals?

I recently heard someone say that the Church owes the conversion of St Paul to the prayers of St Stephen. I only pray that something good will come out of the death of Fr Michael Kamau and all the other innocent people who’ve died in the recent unrest.

    On my today’s playlist:

    Who knew - P!nk

    Sacred Arias - Andrea Bocelli

Nipo - Mr Blue ft Q-Chilla

    Liverpool 3 – 0 Sunderland!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been feeling out of sorts where football is concerned since the beginning of the season. Well, it’s mostly cos I was pretending to be too busy for footie but I’m back in the game. I went out yesterday but was in a hurry to get back home to catch Liverpool vs Sunderland. The Reds haven’t had a victory for over a month so they were definitely needing some fan love. I missed kick-off but caught it from the 15th minute. The first half was nothing to write home about, with the Black Cats stifling Liverpool the whole time, although the game stats for that half showed that the Reds had more attempts on goal, mostly long-range shots from Torres. Looks like he’s learnt well from Gerrard.

Anyway, the second half was electric. Torres, Crouch and Gerrard came in to save the day with some spot-on shots (also with help from Carragher who set up Crouch with an excellent cross). I definitely started to breathe easy after that particular goal. Even Rafa, who’d gone red, loosened up a little bit. Thank the Lord for that victory; I’ve been worried about the Reds’ chances of qualifying for the UEFA next season. Doesn’t look like we’ll make top 8, though.

In other news, it’s been a rough couple of weeks, having to say goodbye to yet another awesome relative my uncle Evans. It came as a major shock and it’s one of those things where the reality doesn’t hit you for a while and when it does, it comes down like a ton of bricks. I’m so sick of people dying around me. I know it’s God’s will and God’s will is perfect, but…Seriously Death, take a holiday!!! Osiris, have you not enough subjects by now??? Take a friggin break!

    Another One Bites the Dust

In this post I’d told you about our dog Rani who we were looking to put in retirement. Well, the vet came to see her and advised us to have her put down because she was suffering too much from her cancer and old age. This photo was taken on Jan 1st 2008, the day before she was put to sleep. I know it looks strange to see a cat and a dog that close to each other, but in our household cats and dogs live in relative harmony. That’s because dogs get very attached to people and they know that we care for our cats so to stay in our favour they don’t mess around with the cats. And everyone gets along just fine. Dogs are smart!

I’ve never before in my life had to live without a dog in the household for this long. It’s only been 13 days but I’m missing her badly… Enjoy dog heaven, Rani.
